REVIEW: GIRLZ (Edinburgh Fringe Festival)
Star rating: ★★★★
Welcome back, Girlz!
When I heard that the show had returned to the EdFringe, I knew it was going to be good. Their Instagram teasers, from introducing the cast individually to the bold pink lettering and vibrant colour scheme, had me hooked before I even walked into the venue.
Girlz is a fun, energetic new British musical following the rise of a modern girl band and the turbulent realities behind their public persona. Powered by a very strong cast, the production relies heavily on the sharp group dynamic among its ensemble, with Meggie Hughes taking on the role of Nicky alongside Tamara Tare as Alex, Zoe Antoniou as Jaz, Daniella Mirels as Kim, Abigail Wiltshire as Charlie, and Tomas Baines rounding out the group as Adam.
While tracing their path in the music business, the show goes beyond a standard rise-to-fame story to explore the darker side of the industry, diving into online hate, mental health struggles, and toxic behaviour. The production features strong vocals throughout, elevated by lovely harmonies, catchy original songs, and high-energy choreography that brings that iconic girl-band visual identity to life.
Although some of those heavier storylines felt a little rushed and could have benefited from more time to develop, it is completely understandable given the short Fringe running time. Overall, Girlz is a fun, highly entertaining piece with clear potential, and I’d be very interested to see how the musical develops beyond the Fringe.
Girlz is playing until 30th August as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at 24 Gilded Balloon Patter House - Doonstairs
